Aesculapius and the snake
A tribute to the history of medicine.
I was invited by the NOVA University of Medicine to create a site-specific artwork on the historical building, for the ccelebration of the 70th year of the Instituion. I proposed a series of metal silhouettes representing key figures in the development and practice of medicine. The installation is designed so that the figures stand out against the sky, creating a composition that evokes both the history and contemporary values of medicine and the university.
On the left, more prominent and larger in size, are the figures of Chiron and Aesculapius, symbolising the roots of medicine in ancient Greece. Chiron, the wise centaur, represents knowledge and dedication to teaching, while Aesculapius, the god of healing, evokes medical practice and ethics. Together, they refer to the origin of health studies, where science and humanity come together to care for and heal.
